  4.     In John le Carre's fictional world of spy vs. spy, the good
  5. spooks outfox the bad spooks by dealing in deceit and deception.
  6. In the real world of counterespionage, the FBI is taking a much
  7. more candid approach. This month it began running an unusual
  8. help-wanted ad in a Russian-language newspaper in New York City to
  9. make a very public plea: anyone having "direct knowledge of KGB
  10. methods or operations" should call or write the nearest FBI office.
  11. The ad provides telephone numbers, including that of a
  12. counterintelligence section conveniently manned by Russian-speaking
  13. agents.

  15.     The appeal is directed at the roughly 200,000 Soviet citizens
  16. who have immigrated to the U.S. since 1975, many of whom live in
  17. the New York area. The purpose of the ads, says FBI spokesman Milt
  18. Ahlerich, is the "identification of hostile intelligence
  19. activities." That includes the detection of approaches made to
  20. Soviet emigres by KGB agents. But couldn't the callers deliberately
  21. feed disinformation to the FBI? "That could happen," concedes
  22. Ahlerich. "We're prepared to address the problem." Despite the
  23. FBI's new glasnost, Ahlerich would not even hint at what
  24. respondents to the ad have been telling the bureau.
